Mission Bhagiratha is a brain child of Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao to provide safe drinking water through the pipeline at Komatibanda at Gajwel in Medak district. Narendra Modi will inaugurate a series of programmes, including a massive 40,000-crore Telangana state water grid ‘Mission Bhageeratha’, during Modi maiden visit to Telangana. The state government has made elaborate security arrangements.
Rao had conceived and executed a similar project while he was the MLA for Siddipet Assembly Constituency in 1996-97. The project had cost Rs 60 crore. Water was lifted from Lower Manair Dam and supplied to all households in about 180 villages in Siddipet constituency.

The website further explains, “The state-level grid will comprise of a total of 26 internal grids. The main trunk pipelines of this project would run about 5000 km, and the secondary pipelines running a length of about 50000 km would be used to fill service tanks inhabitations. From here the village-level pipeline network of about 75,000 km would be used to provide clean drinking water to households.”
The Telangana Water Grid, however, depends on water resources available from the rivers flowing through the state – Krishna and Godavari. A total of 34 thousand million cubic meters of water from Godavari river and 21.5 thousand million cubic meters from Krishna river would be used for the water grid. Water from Srisailam, Sriram Sagar Project, Komuram Bheem Project, Paleru Reservoir, Jurala Dam, Nizam Sagar Project will also be used.
According to the Telangana NavNirman Sena website, the project has been sanctioned over Rs 790 crore. Reports also say that while initially the water will not be charged, the government will meet with villagers and fix a rate only after arriving at a consensus with them.
With this, about 67 thousand households of the Gajwel Assembly constituency will get safe drinking water through the pipeline. The Prime Minister will be dedicating 1200 MW Singareni Thermal power plant to the nation besides laying the foundation stone for the NTPC 1600 MW power plant and revival of Ramagundam Fertiliser Plant on the occasion.
He will also lay the foundation stone for the long pending Manoharabad- Kothapalli new railway line and also a textile park at Warangal besides the Kaloji Narayana Rao Health University.
