Telangana gears up for Phase II of sheep distribution

Hyderabad: Keeping in view the shortage of sheep for distribution under Sheep Distribution Scheme, the State government has decided to procure sheep from faraway States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and also Madhya Pradesh.

Further, the officials have been instructed to begin distribution of sheep to beneficiaries under the second list in districts where the first list of applicants have been covered.

Since the launch of the sheep distribution scheme, the State government has distributed 42 lakh sheep units to around 2.1 lakh beneficiaries. To ensure quality sheep for distribution and also to avoid transportation problems, the officials issued orders to procure sheep from the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. But of late, it has become a tough task for the officials as well as the shepherds to find quality sheep.

On Wednesday, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav directed the officials to identify other States from where sheep could be purchased in the wake of shortage of sheep in neighbouring States.

The move also ensured reduction of incidents of sheep recycling where sheep distributed under the scheme were procured by middlemen in the neighbouring States and sold to shepherds elsewhere in the State again to be procured under the scheme. Such incidents were reported repeatedly from the border areas of neighbouring States, forcing the State government to deploy task force teams to curb the practise.

Further, the Minister wanted officials to make arrangements for distribution of sheep to applicants in the second list. “We have completed sheep distribution to the first set of applicants in districts like Kamareddy, Komuram Bheem-Asifabad and Jagtial districts. Now, it is time to extend the benefit to second set of applicants and the officials should prepare an action plan in this regard,” he said.

While about 96.13 per cent applicants received sheep in Kamareddy district, Komuram Bheem-Asifabad district has completed sheep distribution to 94.04 per cent of applicants.

The officials have been directed to expedite sheep distribution in the districts of Rangareddy, Suryapet, Nirmal, Karimnagar and Khammam which are lagging behind.

In a teleconference with the Collectors and district officials of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department from the State Secretariat, Srinivas Yadav instructed the officials to prepare contingency plans and ensure that there was no shortage of fodder and water for sheep during ensuing summer.

The Minister also asked the officials to ensure speedy clearance of pending insurance schemes where only 10,141 of the 20,738 claims were resolved so far.
