Finance Commission all praise for Kaleshwaram

Hyderabad: The State government’s ambitious irrigation project, Kaleshwaram, found yet another admirer in Arvind Mehta, secretary of 15th Finance Commission. The commission members appreciated the State government for implementing the ambitious project along with Mission Bhagiratha terming them as model projects for the entire nation.

They said that the Kaleshwaram project would definitely play a key role in national development in near future.

The 15th Finance Commission is touring Telangana to examine expenditure of funds by the Telangana government on several development projects and expressed its complete satisfaction on progress of various schemes. Led by Arvind Mehta, the Commission members conducted field inspection of ongoing works at Ranganayaka Sagar project and Annaram barrage of Kaleshwaram project as well as works of Mission Bhagiratha on Saturday.

Chief Secretary SK Joshi and Principal Secretary for Finance K Ramakrishna Rao explained to the members of the 15th Finance Commission about progress of Ranganayaka Sagar tunnel, canal construction and expenditure of funds. They also explained how the works were being monitored on a regular basis by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao.

Model projects

Speaking to mediapersons, Mehta termed both Kaleshwaram project and Mission Bhagiratha as model projects for the entire nation to replicate. He stated that only through construction of such projects that one could ensure progress in agriculture sector which would in turn strengthen the national economy. “The main object of Finance Commission is comprehensive rural development,” he said.

The commission members expressed satisfaction over maintaining standards of construction works and equipment used for Kaleshwaram project which was on a par with many national and international irrigation projects. They said they had no doubts about completion of first phase of Kaleshwaram project ahead of rainy season this year, considering the pace of ongoing works.

“We never witnessed progress of irrigation projects at such a breakneck speed. If completed within fixed timeframe, the government can successfully control the project costs,” Mehta felt.

Principal Secretary for Finance Ramakrishna Rao told mediapersons that the State government was availing loans for speedy completion of various development projects. He said the State had a surplus budget and was taking loans within permissable limits following financial discipline. He explained that the members of 15th Finance Commission expressed their satisfaction over obtaining loans and their expenditure.
