Crowds continue to throng Medaram

Jayashankar Bhupalpally: Medaram, the abode of tribal goddesses Sammakka-Saralamma, continued to witness sea of humanity on the second day of the four-day jatara on Thursday.

Devotees, both tribals and non-tribals, from far off places turned up for the jatara which is said to be the biggest tribal congregation in Asia. Nearly 50 lakh devotees offered obeisance to the goddess till Wednesday.

“Around 1.30 crore devotees are expected to turn up for jatara this year,” said Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari, and added that devotees from Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh offered prayers at Medaram.

Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari and Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy are in touch with the officials who are overseeing the arrangements. They walked along the lanes and by-lanes at the jatara and interacted with the devotees to know the problems being faced by them.

Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh along with two of his Cabinet colleagues, Andhra Pradesh Endowments Minister P Manikyala Rao and several MLAs from Telangana including Assembly Speaker S Madhudusdhana Chary paid obeisance to the goddesses on Thursday.

Raman Singh appreciated the Telangana government for making proper arrangements for the benefit of the devotees.

Saying that the Medaram is the tribal ‘Khumb Mela’, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari found fault with the Union government for not according national festival status to Medaram jatara.
He, however, said that the State government was taking steps to see that jatara like situation prevails the whole year by developing the surroundings of Medaram.

Sammakka in the form of vermilion casket was brought to Gadde around 8 pm by the Vaddes (priests) amidst tight police security from the groves in Chilakala Gutta , located about 1.5 km from the Gaddelu (Altar). There was much commotion while bringing the goddess Sammakka to the altar as devotees in large numbers tried to have a glimpse of the Vaddes who were carrying the goddess.
