Hyderabad: Despite the Opposition parties putting up a united fight, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) scored a near clean sweep in the by-elections held to sarpanch posts in 23 gram panchayats, securing 16 sarpanch posts on Monday. While Congress secured four sarpanch seats, the BJP managed to win one seat even as independents won two sarpanch posts.

Interestingly, the entire Opposition joined hands to retain their grip over Sujathnagar in Kothagudem mandal which was known as the stronghold of CPI(M). However, the TRS candidate secured a majority of 1,126 votes over his nearest rival party candidate. The ruling party also achieved a unanimous victory at Karnamamidi in Mancherial district. The latest victory only consolidates the position of the TRS ahead of the proposed elections to gram panchayats.

As per the election results declared, TRS won sarpanch posts in Boregaon of Adilabad district, Sujathnagar and Gumpena in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district, Upparamalyala of Karimnagar district, Boorgupalli, Gundamarajpalli and Gurthur of Mahabubnagar district, Karnamamidi of Mancherial district, Allipur in Medak district, Vaddipatla and Palem in Nalgonda district, Brahmanapalli in Peddapalli district, Mykode in Sangareddy district, Kondapur in Siddipet district, Manapuram in Suryapet district and Nagal Kadamur in Wanaparthy district.

The Congress managed to win Baswapur in Mahabubnagar district, Raikode in Sangareddy district, Potlapalli in Siddipet district and Veepanagandla in Wanaparthy district. Ramapuram in Jogulamba-Gadwal district and Damarancha in Medak district were won by independent candidates, while the BJP scored a lone win at Gaddampalli of Nagarkurnool district.

Meanwhile, luck favoured the Congress candidate Sarojanamma, as the winner was decided with a toss. Congress won the Potlapally gram panchayat election in Husnabad mandal.
