Hyderabad: To provide better marketing facilities for farmers to sell their produce, the State government has constituted a team of officials from the marketing department to tour various States to study crop production, minimum support price and marketing methods. The officials’ team will submit its report by January 13, making necessary recommendations to improve agricultural marketing facilities in the State.

Irrigation and Marketing Minister T Harish Rao held an extensive review meeting with the officials concerned at BRK Bhavan here on Sunday and directed them to visit states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Haryana to prepare the report on marketing methods adopted by these states. The officials’ team will also study effective purchasing methods as well.

The Minister wanted the officials to prepare an estimation on rice mills, ginning mills, dal mills and oil mills along with their milling capacity and submit the report by January 13. They were also asked to prepare an estimated production of various crops being cultivated in the State. He suggested that the government’s ‘Mana Kooragayalu’ stalls at all metro rail stations and integrated markets to make quality and organic vegetables available for all.

As against 330 NABARD godowns sanctioned to the State, construction of only 18 godowns is yet to be completed. Harish Rao advised the officials to complete their construction by the end of March this year. Construction of another 34 godowns being constructed under the third phase, is also scheduled to be completed shortly. He suggested that the district collectors concerned should intervene and resolve disputes pertaining to lands allocated for godowns to facilitate construction of new godowns. He also spoke to Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy over phone and urged him to resolve land disputes pertaining to godown lands in Suryapet and Chivvemla.

After completion of construction, officials have been instructed to hand over the new godowns to market committees as well as Civil Supplies department, Cotton Corporation of India, Food Corporation of India and other public sector organisations for storage of fresh crop. Public sector units have been asked to complete other formalities and hire godowns from the State government for necessary help.

Fresh licenses to traders and commission agents, will be issued only after creating awareness among them on latest model Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act. The Minister wanted officials to issue licenses to traders from neighbouring States to increase competition between them and ensure remunerative price for farmers. He expressed displeasure over low revenue through cattle markets being operated by agriculture market committees against those being operated by gram panchayats. He wanted officials to take measures for proper collection of market fee.

Marketing Director Lakshmi Bai, joint directors Lakshmanudu and Ravikumar and other officials were present.
