Hyderabad: The New Year has begun on a positive note for the city, with promises of a major boost to infrastructure development in the State capital. These are apart from works worth a whopping Rs 3,200 crore that are under way at 19 locations across Hyderabad.

Announcing this after declaring open the underpass at the Ayyappa Society Junction — the first project to be completed under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) — Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao said 2018 would see several projects being launched and completed for the people.

The underpass, he said, was just the beginning with many more projects under SRDP to be completed during March-June. The Minister said the government was planning different projects worth Rs 23,000 crore under the four phases of SRDP.

GHMC finalised tenders for the construction of one lakh double-bedroom houses. For executing the rest of the SRDP works and other developmental works, municipal bonds will be issued to generate revenue, the Minister said.

Taking a dig at opposition parties, Rao said global cities were not developed overnight. “Rome was not built in a day. All plans for making Hyderabad a global city are being taken up in a planned manner,” he said.

Listing out various initiatives of the State government, the Minister said elevated corridors for 111 km were planned in the city. As part of this, two corridors — JBS to Tumkunta and Patny to Kompally — were planned, and efforts were on for the last one year to get Defence land from the Central government for this.

The State was prepared to compensate the Defence Ministry in terms of allocating land too. “On our front, all financial requirements and reports are ready for executing the projects,” he said.

The Minister also complimented GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy and the staff for bagging the Open Defecation Free status for the city. Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy, Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy and others also spoke.
