Differently-abled man sets an example by building IHHL

Jogulamba Gadwal: At a time when the administration is trying tooth-and-nail to motivate people to build Individual Household Latrines (IHHL), a differently-abled person who lives in a shack rose up to the occasion becoming an inspiration for others by building an IHHL with just Rs 6000 and is using it.

Venkateswarlu, a resident of Kalukuntla village in Manopad mandal of Gadwal district has more than 70 per cent locomotor disability as he doesn’t have a leg and a hand. He walks holding a stick in one hand as support and a prosthetic leg to walk. He lives along with his four-member family in a small single-room hut with walls made of mud.

He, along with his family members built a IHHL with the first installment of Rs 6000 given by the district administration for construction of IHHL as part of Swachh Bharat Mission. The family has already started using the same.

It has to be mentioned that the government is giving Rs 12,000 to beneficiaries to encourage them from constructing IHHLs and going open defecation-free in villages and municipal areas. In many villages one can see IHHLs constructed incompletely or just for the sake of getting Rs 12,000 beneficiary amount. Even after construction of IHHLs, many villagers are using them as store rooms and continue to defecate openly. In these circumstances, a differently-abled person constructing his own toilet with just 50 per cent of subsidy amount is worth appreciating.

District Collector Rajat Kumar Saini was also highly appreciative of Venkateswarlu for becoming a role model for others in his village for his swachh effort. Collector said that the entire district needed to draw inspiration from Venkateswarlu and work towards making Jogulamba Gadwal district open defecation-free soon. Mushaida, MPDO, has assured that the district administration would immediately deposit the rest of Rs 6,000 beneficiary amount in his account.
