Differently-abled man from Gadwal turns role model

Jogulamba Gadwal: At a time when the administration is trying very hard to motivate people to build Individual Household Latrines (IHHL), a differently-abled person who lives in a shack rose to the occasion and became an inspiration for others by building an IHHL with just Rs 6,000.

Venkateswarlu, a resident of Kalukuntla village in Manopad mandal of Gadwal district, has more than 70 per cent locomotor disability as he doesn’t have a leg and a hand. He walks by holding a stick in one hand as support and uses a prosthetic limb. He lives along with his four-member family in a small single-room hut with walls made of mud.

He, along with his family members, built an IHHL with the first instalment of Rs 6,000 given by the district administration for construction of IHHL as part of Swachh Bharat Mission and the family has already started using it.

Misuse of funds

The government is giving Rs 12,000 to beneficiaries to encourage them to build IHHLs and going outdoor in defecation-free villages and municipal areas. In many villages, one can see incomplete IHHLs just for the sake of getting the Rs 12,000 beneficiary amount. Even after construction of IHHLs, many villagers are using them as store rooms and continue to defecate openly. In these circumstances, a differently-abled person constructing his own toilet with just 50 per cent of subsidy amount is worth appreciating.

District Collector Rajat Kumar Saini was also highly appreciative of Venkateswarlu for becoming a role model for others in his village for his ‘swachh’ effort. The Collector said that the entire district needed to draw inspiration from Venkateswarlu and work towards making Jogulamba Gadwal district outdoor defecation-free soon. Mushaida, MPDO, said that the district administration would immediately deposit the rest of the Rs 6,000 beneficiary amount in his account.
