Kumram Bheem Asifabad/Nirmal: True to expectations of police authorities, rate of various offences in particular crimes against women and road accidents is going down in smaller districts.

This phenomenon can be attributed to State government’s decision to form newer entities for simplifying administration and a slew of measures taken by police to check the two menaces.

The State government in October of 2016 had taken up the arduous exercise of reorganising the districts and creating new entities so that welfare schemes could reach people in need. This move has come handy for police to curb several menaces including crimes against women and road accidents which claim hundreds of lives every year.

Newly formed Kumram Bheem Asifabad district registered 153 crimes against women in 2017 when compared to 184 in 2016, showing a decline by 16 per cent. Whereas, Nirmal saw 283 offences against women in 2017, while 231 crimes were reported in the previous year.

Likewise, these two new districts had a steep dip in road accidents as well. Kumram Bheem Asifabad district recorded 168 accidents in 2017 as against 257 in the corresponding period. Nirmal registered 327 mishaps in 2017 and 491 in 2016.  Number of victims has also come down.

Kumram Bheem Asifabad SP Kalmeshwar Shingenawar told ‘Telangana Today’ that SHE teams were formed at police sub-division level in the district to keep a watch on eve teasing, ragging and molestation. No such crimes were reported due to presence of the teams. Counselling centres were set up in certain police stations to resolve family disputes.

To instill a sense of discipline and to control road accidents, police of this district booked 51,000 cases under the MV act and imposed fine worth Rs 72 lakh, besides conducting awareness camps for the citizens. In addition to that, 310 cases were booked against drunk drivers.

Accident Resolution Teams, comprising a local Inspector, officials of Panchayat Raj, Roads and Building, TSRTC, RTO and local representatives were constituted to identify black spots and accident prone areas, and to find preventive solutions.
