100-bed Institute of Mental Health to come up in Warangal

Warangal Urban: A State of the art mental hospital will come up on the premises of the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Warangal, to cater to the needs of patients from north Telangana districts.

A Central team from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is scheduled to visit the city for the physical verification of the site on January 10 in this regard.

According to KMC sources, the mental hospital with a capacity of 100 beds would be set up at a cost of Rs 30 crore. While 60 per cent of the cost would be borne by the Union government, 40 per cent is the share of the State government.

Site identified

Speaking to Telangana Today, KMC principal Dr V Chandrashekar said that they had already identified the site for setting up the hospital on the KMC campus. “The hospital can be set up adjacent to the building of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) super specialty hospital whose works are going on,” he said and added that the mental hospital would become the second such facility to be set up in the State after the Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda, in Hyderabad.

“We are making plans to develop the hospital on a par with the National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore,” Dr Chandrashekar added.

The hospital will have wings like in-patient, out-patient, forensic science, adolescent psychology, clinical psychology, criminal psychology, psychiatric social work and counselling. A forensic psychiatry ward would soon be set up at MGM Hospital, the attached hospital of KMC.

“We are planning to lay foundation for the construction of the mental hospital after the Central team’s visit and the central public works department will take up the construction work. It is expected that the construction would be finished in a year,” Dr Chandrashekar added.

On the other hand, the KMC management is making efforts for approval from the Medical Council of India (MCI) for the introcution of four postgraduate seats in psychiatry department as it has recently appointed a professor in the wing.
