Hyderabad: After a glittering start to World Telugu Conference on Friday, the day two at Ravindra Bharathi venue began with a session on children’s literature. The full-house session was presided over by Pillalamarri Ramu, Head of Telugu Department, University of Hyderabad.

The session saw speakers throwing light on various aspects of Bala Sahithyam (children’s literature) in Telugu, and launch of various books on children’s literature.

Ramu said, as children are our future, children’s literature plays a key role in the upbringing of a child. At an age where our mother tongue was facing serious threats, encouraging child literature would help in preserving our language, he added.

Director of National Book Trust, Pattipaka Mohan, said a record number of 36 books on child literature were released from Telangana after the State formation. He also spoke about how Baalala Geyaalu (child tracks) aid playful learning.

Aitha Chandraiah spoke, “In ordinary tales, only human characters have a voice, unlike child tales where every element of nature speaks.” He added that encouraging children to read these tales will inculcate a spirit of brotherhood.

Eminent educationist Veda Kumar, while speaking about Baalala Patrikalu (child magazines), noted that extensive seminars and talks on Telugu literature were organised at district levels during the last three years. He added that there was a need for more child magazines in Telugu. Besides this, Dasari Venkatramana also spoke about Baalala Navalalu (child novels).

The session ended with the release of seven new Telugu works of literature on children, including ‘Aksharalatho Aata, ‘Baala Chaithanyam’, ‘Palle Naa Thalli’, to name a few.
Tiruvaipati Varadarajan, who came from the USA to attend the conference, said the government must continue the same spirit even after the event.
