Telangana eyes top spot in sports sector

Nalgonda: The two-day tournament of the fourth Telangana State Senior Weight Lifting Championship in which 300 players from 31 districts are taking part, began here in Ambedkar auditorium in Nalgonda on Sunday, with Nalgonda MP Gutha Sukender formally inaugurating the tournament.

Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) chairman Allipuram Venkateshwar Reddy said that Telangana State, which is at the top in the implementation of welfare schemes and development, would also stand at top in sports soon. Stating that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Reddy was keen on encouraging sportspersons, he pointed out that the State government has extended Rs 15 lakh financial aid to weightlifter E Deekshitha, who won a gold medal at the Olympics.

Stating that weightlifters have a good future in the State, he said that the sportsmen should practice with dedication and commitment to excel in national and international games.

He informed that the government is planning to constitute a high level committee to develop sports, adding that the SATS board meeting, which would be held on December 4, would discuss and come out with several proposals for development of sports in the State. Appointment of 200 coaches, SATS regional centres, reconstruction of LB Stadium, sports schools at Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar were among the proposals.

Underlining the need to encourage players from rural areas, Sukender Reddy said that the government has sanctioned stadiums in all Assembly constituencies and construction works are in progress.
