Telangana discom spends a bomb on infra for 24-hr supply

Warangal: The Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSNPDCL) developed infrastructure worth Rs 1,059.4 crore to ensure smooth supply of electricity round the clock to the agriculture sector.

The discom covers erstwhile Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Adilabad and Nizamabad districts.

NPDCL Director (Operations) B Narsinga Rao said they set up 258 sub-stations with the capacity of 33/11 kv and laid 2,100-km 33 kv distribution lines in the last two years for the 24-hour power supply to the farming sector. “We also set up 618 additional and 234 enhancement transformers to avoid interruptions in the power supply,” Rao said.

Before launching the 24-hour power supply scheme from December 31 (Sunday) midnight, a trial run will be conducted around 10 pm.

In the erstwhile Warangal alone, NPDCL spent Rs 259.81 crore on developing infrastructure.

Meanwhile, removal of auto-starters fitted to motor-pump sets has become a big challenge for NPDCL as farmers refuse to get rid of it. This is despite the discom rolling out a campaign two months ago against the use of auto-starters.

As per the official record, the total number of the agriculture connections is 10,97,827. Of these, 4,50,463 are reportedly connected with the auto-starters. Officials managed to disconnect only 68, 670 as on December 23, but it seems there is a need for more awareness among farmers besides continuing with the special drive to check the use of auto-starters.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari urged farmers to remove the fixture. He has also asked NPDCL officials to distribute pamphlets explaining the adverse effects of excessive drawing of water. “Due to the use of auto-starters, water in bore-wells and wells will deplete soon,” he said.
