Swachh autos to keep Warangal garbage free

Warangal Urban: The health wing authorities of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) plan to deploy 200 new autorickshaws to collect the garbage from houses in the city soon.

As many as 30 autorickshaws are all set to collect the waste from Wednesday, the remaining 170 autos will reach the city by the end of January. Officials have already identified the beneficiaries for these autorickhaws as the government has decided to provide employment to jobless youth through this initiative.

“We have already entered into agreements with 26 persons with regard to the Swachh autorickshaws and have identified all the beneficiaries,” Municipal Health Officer (MHO) B Raja Reddy told ‘Telangana Today‘. Unemployed youth can become the owner-cum-driver of autos after agreement.

“We have been expecting the arrival of autos since August, but due to different reasons, it has got delayed,” the MHO added.

In the first phase, the autorickshaws would be used in commercial areas as well as developed colonies. It is said that these autos would be fitted with tracking system for better supervision.

The autorickhaws will collect dry waste and wet waste separately as they have two separate chambers. According to officials, nearly 250 tonnes of garbage was generated per day in the city.

Meanwhile, the GWMC is also proposing to set up six garbage transfer stations in the city. These stations will work as the transit halts for the short haul garbage laden trucks to dump garbage collected from different parts before they are segregated and mounted onto long haul trucks to be taken to dumping site at Madikonda landfill. “We have identified location for three garbage transfer stations,” said MHO Raja Reddy.
