‘Shatavadanam’ mesmerises audiences at WTC

Hyderabad: It was a test for improvisation, memory and command over Telugu language and Dr GM Rama Sharma took the Sathavadhanam literary challenge with ease and mastery at Telangana Saraswatha Parishat here on Saturday.

Organised as part of the World Telugu Conference, the Sathavadhanam left the audience mesmerised as Rama Sharma came up with brilliant lines of poetry for the questions posed at him.

Before the commencement of the performance, he recited a poem “KCR Nayaka Kesari Sari” in praise of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for organizing the conference, amid cheers and claps from the audience.

As part of the Satavadhanam, Pracchaka pose literary questions with conditions in prose and the Sathavadhani has to respond through poems. The conditions imposed can include not repeating words or usage of only a set of alphabets in the poem etc.

When Pradana Pracchaka Sathavadhani B Aparna asked Rama Sharma to come up with a poem using Saddimuta, Siddipet, Avvamata and Peddapita, he responded effortlessly.

The entire poem cannot be recited at once and only after listening to all questions and reciting the first line of the poem each, Sathavadhani takes the first questioner and continues with the second line of the poem.

He was later asked to recite a poem using Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Nizamabad and Adilabad and he took no time in replying.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari, who was chief guest for the session, said it was great to witness many literary exponents on one platform and exhibiting their talent.
The State Government is planning to make a document and documentary as well of the entire five-day conference, he said.

Types of challenges

Telugu literary exponents perform different types of challenges, including Ashtavadhanam (questions posed by eight questioners), Sathavadhanam (questions by 100 questioners) and Sahasravadhanam (by 1000 questioners). One who successfully completed Ashtavadhanam is called Ashtavadhani, and after Sathavadanam, they are called Sathavadhani and Sahasravadhani.

Questions posed are also different types such as Datta Padhalu, Samasya, Varnana and Ashulu.
