Moves afoot in Telangana to save power: Jagadish Reddy

Hyderabad: The Minister for Power G Jagadish Reddy on Sunday said the State has emerged on top in terms of power generation and hoped that it would top the list of States in power saving as well.

Flagging off the Energy Walk here in the city as part of the National Energy Conservation Week celebrations, he said: “The State will explore the scope for augmenting generation of non-conventional energy in a big way.”

Observing that the State had been endowed with huge coal deposits in the Singareni Collieries and that this has been the major source of power. the Minister said: “But, once we exhaust the coal deposits, the State would be at stake and the future generations would be at a loss.”

The State has the unique advantage of being the provider of 24 hour supply for domestic and agriculture sectors, but we need to ensure judicious and efficient use of our energy sources, he added.

Later, addressing a meeting at Visweswarya Bhavan, Reddy said: “the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is the role model for energy conservation.” He had learnt enough about energy conservation from the Chief Minister in his 17 years of association with him. Many States have scores of villages without power supply till date, the Minister said, adding that he was surprised to know this fact at the recently concluded Energy Ministers meeting in New Delhi.

Energy conservation drive need not be confined to only the power sector, energy in all its forms should be saved for the sake of the future generations. It will help save the environment as well, he said, adding that use of LED lights should be promoted on a massive scale.

The Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation has reached an understanding with Syndicate Bank to promote the use of solar power by setting up solar panels on their roof-tops of employees of power utilities in the first phase, he said. Moves are afoot to provide 16 lakh LED bulbs in Gram Panchayats and Nagar Panchayats. By promoting the use of LED bulbs, the State could achieve a net saving of 40 MW in local bodies, he said.
