GWMC aims for better rank in ‘Swachh Survekshan’

Warangal Urban: In order to achieve better rank in the ‘Swachh Survekshan -2018’, the authorities of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) have come up with a new programme called ‘Swacch Dhootha’ to create awareness among the citizens on various parameters that will help to achieve a better rank comparing to one of the last year.

While the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) got the 22nd rank, GWMC Warangal secured 28th place among the 434 cities that went for the rankings under the Swachh Survekshan- 2017. Under ‘Swachh Dhootha’ programme, the authorities have roped in about 120 women of the self-help groups (SHGs) from different divisions and they were provided with the required training by the ITC’s team which is looking after the well-being out of waste (WOW) campaign.

“The women of the SHGs have started visiting houses to cover all the houses in 58 divisions under the GWMC limits. They explain the need to segregate the wet waste and solid waste. Downloading of the Swachhatha App, need to call at 1969 and usage of the individual sanitary latrine (ISL) will help achieve good rank,” explained municipal health officer (MHO) Dr B Raja Reddy. Sanitary inspectors will monitor the work of these SHG women, the MHO added.

However, the authorities are anticipating a rank in the top 20 in the Survekshan 2018 as about 4,000 cities are participating in the competition. “If we have more waste processing units, we can achieve a rank in top 10. But we are lagging behind in this category. However, our plans to set up the biomethanation plant will also be an advantage for us to score more marks to achieve a better rank,” said the official.
