Farmers celebrate ‘Sunem Panduga’ in Sangareddy

Sangareddy: Farmers in Narayankhed and Zaheerabad area had celebrated the traditional “Sunem” Pandgua (Sunem Festival) in grand way on the occasion of Ela Amavasya in Rabi crops on Sunday.  F

armers in these parts of Sangareddy district offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi Devi amid the Jowar crop, a rabi crop, besides performing ‘Annadhanam’ to agriculture labourers living in their neighbourhood.

In a make shift Mandapa amid the Jowar crop, family members of farmers have offered prayers to the goddess Lakshmi. Farmers have made special recipes like gruel, Jowar rotis, and a recipe called Bajji Kura. Gruel made at home will be brought in a decorated clay pot to farm following the age old tradition. While offering prayers, the women members of family light a diva, which the women will take back home in Adda ( a measuring container). Until recent years, the farmers used to proceed to farms amid the beating of drums and playing other traditional music, but the tradition has been almost stopped.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Tukkareddy Sudharshan, a farmer from Maruthiigonda village, has said that they will celebrate the festival thanking the goddess Lakshmi for giving abundant harvest during Kharif and seeing better harvest from Rabhi crops. A festive atmosphere was prevailed over these villages as farmers, women, children in traditional attire were seen moving amid the crops.
