CI injured in attack by project oustees in Nalgonda

Nalgonda: Circle Inspector of Nampally Balagangi Reddy was injured when outstees of Charlkagudem Project allegedly attacked the policemen with sticks at the site of the project.

The tussle between the police and the oustees began when the displaced farmers tried to stop the ongoing works of Cherlagudem Project. The alleged abusive language used by a police officer provoked the farmers that led to the incident.

Demanding Rs 8 lakh compensation per acre, land to land and a double bedroom house, the displaced farmers have been staging protest demonstration near the site of the project for the last 40 days. Cherlagudem, Venkatapally, Kudabashupally, Velugupally, Velugupally tanda, Narsireddy Gudem and parts of Kudabakshpally villages would be submerged under the project, hence the government has decided to acquire their land. The government has already extended compensation of Rs 4 lakhs per acre to some farmers while others rejected the offer demanding higher compensation. The meeting held by the District Collectors with the displaced farmers came out with a decision of compensation of Rs 5.15 lakhs per acre. But, a group of farmers were rigid on their demand of Rs 8 lakhs per acre compensation.  

The displaced farmers, who were dissatisfied with the compensation being offered, erected a tent near the site of the project and staging dharna for the last 30 days. Subsequently, a police picket with six personnel was also set up at the project site.           

The oustees of the project tried to stop the ongoing works of the project on Sunday that started the conflict between the police and farmers.

The farmers were alleging that the police picked up some farmers on Sunday night and beat them up at Nampally police station.

More than 100 farmers from surrounding villages reached the site of the project on Monday morning and again tried to stop the works. When the police tried to pacify them, the tussle took place between farmers and policemen. The angry farmers including women attacked the policemen with sticks. Nampally Circle Inspector has received injury on his head in the attack.

The agitating farmers were also ransacked camp office at the project site. With this, the police resorted to lathi charge to disburse the agitating farmers.

Getting the information, additional police forces have rushed to the site of the project to restore normalcy there. Nearly 200 policemen were reached the place for the purpose of bundo busth.

A farmer K Chandraiah, who was also oustee of the project, has alleged that the officials were taking up the works in the lands of the farmers, which were not acquired by the government, in the night-time. Hence, we have decided to stop the works, which were being taken up in acquired land in the morning time, he added. He said that the Circle Inspector has used abusive language against the women farmers and also tried to tackle them with male police.

He alleged that seven farmers were also missing after the incident.  

Nalgonda DSP S Sudhakar and Devarakonda DSP Ravi kumar were monitoring the situation at the site of Cherlagudem Project.
