Centre grants fund for three backward districts in Telangana

Hyderabad: Niti Aayog recognised the new districts carved out last year and the Central government granted a special fund for three districts under Most Backward Districts category countrywide.

Chief Secretary SP Singh, in a letter to Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, requested inclusion of three more districts – Bhadadri Kothagudem, Jogulamaba Gadwal and Mahabubabad — in addition to Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Kumram Bheem Asifabad and Khammam.

The State government welcomes the proposed initiative especially in view of the closure of Backward Region Grant Fund by the Union government that was implemented in the past, Singh said in his letter.

“While Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts fare low in all the socio-economic parameters enlisted for the computation for the composite index, based on the same composite index as calculated by the State Planning Department, it is revealed that Mahabubabad and Jogulamba Gadwal districts rank equally low, if not worse.

Therefore, we request you to include these districts under the proposed initiative,” he said, adding that after bifurcation of Khammam district, incidence of Left Wing Extremism was more in the newly formed Bhadradri Kothagudem district. “Hence, the proposal for Bhadradri Kothagudem also arises,” he said.
