96% of land acquisition for Kaleshwaram project completed: Harish Rao

Hyderabad: Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao, who completed his three-day inspection of Kaleshwaram project works on Wednesday, said that nearly 96 per cent of the land acquisition for the project was completed.

Talking to mediapersons at Medigadda, he said the process for acquisition of remaining four per cent lands would be completed in the next few days. He expressed happiness over the work progress on different packages of Kaleshwaram project and said the project works would be completed well on time to provide irrigation water to the ayacut by June next.

Completion of such a major project, which would have normally taken a minimum of 6-10 years, in just 20 months is in fact a record of sorts. He said Sundilla and Annaram barrages will also be completed by June and July next. The Medigadda barrage which will benefit erstwhile Adilabad district in a big way will be completed by the end of 2018.

The redesigning exercise taken up by the State government for enhancing the water yield of the Kaleshwarm project, an offshoot of the Pranahitha-Chevella project, was justified even by the Centre. “Modern technology has been used in the implementation of these projects to speed up works while ensuring the desired standards,” Rao said.

Road network

The Minister informed that road network with National Highway standards will be developed at Medigadda-Sundilla-Annaram barrages. He explained that the works on the Kannepalli-Annaram approach channel will be stepped up so as to complete it on time. As part of his three-day stocktaking exercise on the Kaleshwaram project works, he said he had visited almost all barrages and pump houses in construction and discussed the design and specifications with the officials and implementing agencies.

Once the projects in progress were completed, Godavari will have a water spread stretched over 125 km all the year round, which will help promote navigation on the river. It will also facilitate development of pisciculture benefiting lakhs of people from the fishermen community. Proposals have been prepared to construct lift irrigation schemes on a small scale to provide water to agricultural lands in Bhupalpally, Peddapalli and Mancherial districts. For another lift (Chinna Kaleshwaram) taken up to provide Godavari water to Manthani Assembly constituency, the Centre had accorded stage-II forest clearness earlier in the day, informed the Minister.

The Minister has asked companies implementing Kaleshwaram works to adopt six villages and to take up developmental works as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
