Warangal Urban goes ODF way

Warangal Urban: Due to a proactive role of sarpanches and other public representatives coupled with concerted efforts of the district administration, Warangal Urban has become the first district to be declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF) district in the State.

Announcing the feat at a programme organised at the Ambedkar Bhavan in Hanamkonda on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari said a total of 22, 429 Individual Sanitary Latrines (ISLs) were constructed in 94 villages under six mandals in the district.  “I appreciate sarpanches and other public representatives for their support to the district administration in constricting the ISLs,” he said.

District Collector Amrapali Kata said they were also planning to construct magic soak pits that would absorb the wastewater under special programme called ODF Plus in the next two months in the district.  A total of 11,000 ISLs were constructed between October 15 and November 15. These ISLs were constructed under two schemes — Swachh Bharat Mission and Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS).

Earlier in the day, the Deputy CM laid the foundation for the construction of the additional classrooms at the Somidi government school near Kazipet. The estimated cost of the construction is Rs 30 lakh.  Kadiam, along with Warangal West MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar, laid the foundations for laying roads, sewage canals and also inaugurated several facilities in the west constituency.

Speaking on the occasion, Srihari said Rs 7.20 crore had been allotted for the construction of additional classrooms and other infrastructure in government schools in Warangal West Assembly constituency alone. He promised to sanction 12 computers and appoint one instructor at the Somidi school to improve the digital literacy of students. He also directed the engineering officials to take steps to raise the ground so as to avoid inundation during the rainy season.
