Telangana’s Kaleshwaram Project gets forest clearance

Hyderabad: In yet another milestone achievement, the State government’s flagship irrigation project – Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) – received clearance for the second phase from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao directed officials to expedite efforts to obtain remaining permissions for the second phase works.

In a statement issued here on Friday, Harish Rao termed the environment and forest clearance for KLIS as a slap on the face of the evil forces which were trying to obstruct the project by filing court cases. He pointed out that in just the last two weeks, the Kaleshwaram project had received numerous permissions including hydrology clearance, inter-State approval, construction machinery permissions and clearances from the Union Ministry of Water Resources.

The Minister said environment and forest clearances for first phase of the project were already approved. He stated that public hearing has been completed based on terms of references issued for environmental impact assessment on affected villages. It might be recalled that Harish had camped in New Delhi on Nov 21 and 22 to convince the Central Ministers about issuing various permissions for the project.
