Telangana likely to get Rs 145 cr bonus for drinking water schemes

Hyderabad: Telangana is likely to receive a bonus of Rs 145 crore for successful usage of the Central government funds under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) through implementation of rural drinking water schemes. The Centre would also release the remaining Rs 363 crore of Rs 800 crore sanctioned for providing drinking water to 966 flouride-affected villages in erstwhile Nalgonda district.

In a meeting with the Mission Bhagiratha officials on Wednesday, Secretary to Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation Parameswaran Iyer appreciated the State government for its constructive efforts to provide drinking water to all households within a short span under Mission Bhagiratha and NRDWP. Telangana State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation department Engineer-in-Chief Surender Reddy informed him that the State is ready to launch bulk drinking water supply scheme from December end this year. Around 90 per cent works under Mission Bhagiratha have been completed and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department has formulated a comprehensive action plan to complete the pending work within a month.

Iyer termed the State government’s prestigious drinking water project Mission Bhagiratha as a model financial project for other States to replicate. He appreciated the State government for obtaining loans from financial institutions rather than waiting for funds from the Centre. He assured to release the remaining Rs 363 crore for providing drinking water to flouride-affected villages in erstwhile Nalgonda district.

The Centre had already released Rs 437 crore for the scheme and the State government had successfully completed several works including pipelines and pumphouses as part of Mission Bhagiratha. On trial basis, purified drinking water from Godavari River has already reached Yadadri-Bhongiri district before the deadline of March next year where water is being supplied to around 1.16 lakh households in 545 flouride-affected habitations from Shamirpet reservoir.

Chief Minister K Chandhrashekhar Rao’s vision to provide drinking water to all the households, is likely to be fulfilled soon. The work agencies have been directed to double the teams to lay the pipelines and special teams be deployed for fitting valves. Equipment like motors and pumps for supply of water has been delivered and the work to fit them in the respective pumping centres has been expedited. The state government is also taking up interlinking of pipelines with several municipalities and municipal corporations apart from the intra-village connection pipelines.
