SERP workers defy Telangana government’s call to end stir

Mahabubnagar: Strike of Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) workers entered 27th day on Saturday despite the State government’s call to end the stir to avoid any inconvenience to people availing their services.

On Saturday, Telangana SERP Joint Action Committee, Mahabubnagar, held a torch rally in the evening demanding cancellation of the five-year contract renewal system besides other demands. Their demands also included ‘equal pay for equal work’ as per GO Ms No 174. Promotions and increments were also part of their demands.

Mahabubnagar SERP JAC has been holding some innovative protests in the town for the past 27 days. They have been holding barefoot rallies to temples, protesting by cleaning parks and surroundings and so on. Saturday’s torch rally was yet another form of their protests. They also planned to stay awake and observe Saturday night as ‘Jagaram’ night.

SERP workers are the ones who are responsible for implementation of various government schemes. The State government appealed to the workers to call off their strike so that their demands could be considered in an amicable manner. However, the workers are still defiant.
