Red tape drives man to suicide attempt in Jayashankar Bhupalpally

Jayashankar Bhupalpally: Vexed over the negligent and corrupt attitude of revenue officials, a man attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at the office of the Tahsildar at Venkatapur in the district on Saturday. Upon noticing the incident, the office staff immediately shifted him to Mulugu government area hospital and his condition is said to be out of danger.

According to the sources, the victim, who was identified as Gandi Sammaiah of Andugulameedhi village, had been making rounds to the tahsildar’s office for the last several weeks to resolve an issue related to the patta. It was alleged that the Deputy Tahsildar of Venkatapur, Ashok, had demanded Rs 1 lakh to set the records straight under the ongoing ‘land purification’ programme. Sammaiah said that he had already paid Rs 10,000 to the DT, but the records had not been changed. Worried over the attitude of the DT and other revenue officials, Sammaiah tried to end his life by consuming pesticide. Local Sub-Inspector Srikanth visited the office and inquired over the incident with the office staff.
