Minister Ramanna inspects Chanaka-Korata project works in Adilabad

Adilabad: Forest and Environment Minister Jogu Ramanna inspected works of Chanaka-Korata major irrigation project being erected across river Penganga on the borders of Telangana and Maharashtra, on Monday. He instructed officials to expedite execution of the project. The project is being taken up to irrigate 50,000 acres of land of Adilabad district, costing Rs. 1,227 crore.  

He spoke to the Executive Engineer of major irrigation department Ramakrishna and contractor Muralidhar Reddy to find out progress of execution. He directed them to complete the project and to provide water to irrigational needs of farmers belonging to the district. The Minister asserted the works were partially hindered due to release of water from upstream areas of Maharashtra.

He, however,said that the construction would gain momentum in the near future. He informed that Major Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao was regularly monitoring the progress of the works. He recalled that irrigation sector was neglected when State was united.  

Touted to be the lifeline of Adilabad district, works of Chanaka-Korata inter-State irrigation project were commenced in summer of 2016. It is one of three projects jointly taken up by both Telangana and Maharashtra States. Both Chief Ministers entered into a memorandum of understanding for erecting three barrages across Penganga, Pranahita and Godavari in August of 2016. People of Adilabad had been demanding for the prokect since 1975.
