Harish Rao wants Kaleshwaram works to be expedited

Hyderabad: With the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) receiving all major permissions, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao asked the officials concerned to expedite works and complete them within fixed time-frame to commence water supply from June next year. While the district collectors and revenue officials were instructed to complete land acquisition on a war-footing, he wanted the irrigation department officials to simultaneously take up all works including construction of pump houses, tunnels and canals.

At an extensive meeting with the officials of Irrigation, Revenue and Energy departments on Monday, Harish Rao reviewed the progress of the project packages 10 to 14. He also inquired about challenges in completion of the works. The officials explained about obstructions being created by some land owners who are refusing to vacate their lands despite receiving compensation as lands were still under cultivation. The Minister suggested that works should be taken up at places where land acquisition has been completed in coordination with the revenue officials as well as acquire the remaining land required.

The Minister expressed dissatisfaction over delay in tunnel lining works even though construction of tunnels was completed to the extent of 80 per cent. An action plan was being prepared for completion of at least 2 km of canal lining works per day. He wanted deployment of more equipment including cranes, boomers and earthmovers to speed up works. The officials concerned were asked to improve security and ensure safety of workers inside tunnels. Contractors were warned that action will be initiated against them if there was any delay in execution of works.

Simultaneously, the power transmission and distribution companies will complete construction of sub-stations and laying of electric lines for power supply to pumphouses. “We should be able to supply drinking water to households from June next year,” he added. Siddipet district collector Venkatram Reddy informed the Minister that around 11,187 of the 13,969 acre land required for construction of Mallanna Sagar had been successfully acquired and efforts were on to acquire the remaining piece of land. Engineer-in-Chief C Muralidhar has been asked to prepare designs for canals under Kondapochamma Sagar and submit them to the government for necessary approvals.
