Baba Ramdev supports establishment of turmeric board, writes to PM Modi

Hyderabad: Demand for establishment of Turmeric Board gained fresh momentum on Wednesday with Yoga guru Baba Ramdev appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishment of Turmeric Board of India and also fix Minimum Support Price for turmeric.

The appeal from Baba Ramdev comes within days after Nizamabad MP Kavitha met him in Haridwar and facilitated signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth and the State government on working for the development of yoga, ayurveda, health, education, indigenous products, Indian heritage and culture in Telangana State.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, the Yoga guru emphasised the need for establishing the Turmeric Board as well as a quality assessment unit considering that India is largest producer as well as consumer of turmeric in the world. He also suggested for fixing Minimum Support Price for turmeric. He hoped that such measures will encourage introduction of latest technology in turmeric cultivation and ensure good returns for farmers.

Learning about Baba Ramdev’s gesture, MP Kavitha expressed happiness and stated that turmeric had deep roots in Indian culture and yet it was being considered as a commercial crop. “As a result, there is no major research on turmeric crop nor MSP was fixed to benefit farmers,” she pointed out.

The Nizamabad Parliament member stated that problems of turmeric farmers can be addressed only after a separate board is constituted. She pointed out that the Telangana MPs have been fighting for a separate turmeric board for the last four years and succeeded in garnering support from the Chief Ministers of States like Kerala, Assam and Maharashtra. She thanked Baba Ramdev for immediately responding to her request and writing to the Prime Minister emphasising the need for turmeric board.
